Get a PSA and a colonoscopy after 50

Absolute Life Savers. 2 of the most common cancers stopped in their tracks

Had my Colonoscopy in February and they cut 4 well formed polyps out. PSA up next.

Can only echo all the advice and sentiments on this thread. Get the PSI test, poo on the stick, blood tests and general "well man" tests. Doctors are reluctant currently due to waiting lists, post covid backlogs etc. but requesting a blood test is easy and usually the nurse will take care of it ( unfortunately not a Babs Windsor type, might be Hatti Jacques ;-) ).

Things is a lot / most cancers can be treated nowadays especially prostate and bowel but early detection as we know is the key. Geezers don't like going to the quacks. Its a bloke thing I suppose and maybe connected with us lads not showing weakness, vulnerability? Who knows? But the days of "if I ignore it, it usually goes away" and "I'd rather not know" or "if I don't test for it , its not real" are not a good choice and never were.

I was diagnosed myself 3 years ago. Opted for surgery and no return so far, though they said high risk of needing further treatment. I had no symptoms, finger test didn't find anything, only the PSA raised alarm bells. Get tested gents.
Fucking cancer fairy came back last year with (unrelated to prostate) bowel cancer that had spread to the liver - still dealing with that one. Again no symptoms so do the shit on a stick test when you're invited - only way mine was found.

Right, all done. Went for Radiotherapy and had HDR Brachytherapy rather than the regular External Beam variety. More invasive as it is administered internally and involves an overnight stay but just 2 doses one week apart, rather than every day for five weeks. And no hormone therapy required (for me at least) which I didn’t fancy.

All NHS, Southend Hospital (who were brilliant) make a bit of a speciality of this method. Not suitable for everyone as a standalone treatment but if ever you find yourself in the position of having to make a difficult choice worth asking about as it was not initially offered to me, even privately, and I think in my case at least was the best option for success versus minimising the risk of side effects.

Time will tell of course.

Never mind the finger test. Try the Urodynamics test. Two women in a portacabin. In an outside portacabin no-one can hear you scream.

Re: Tarbuck diagnosed with prostate cancer ...
My 77 year old brother had a "scare" about this.

Did a routine blood test because he had diabetes and even before he got back home he got a call from his doctors practice telling - not inviting - him that he had an appointment at 9 o'clock the following morning.

Upshot was that the blood test had picked "something of concern" up and he had been booked in for an MSI at Queens (Romford).

Turned out all clear on all fronts for him (our father had his prostrate removed - the only time I recall him ever being sick, so there is/was an underlying anxiety for us all - another brother has just had successful chemo for the same thing).

In fact - my brother's only observation on the process was "It was fucking noisy in that tube - no wonder it was done in the car park".

I guess it would have been easier & quicker to just say to people, get a test for this, whatever.

Re: Tarbuck diagnosed with prostate cancer ...
Thanks all for the feedback. I am told PSA testing is not definitive which is why there is no screening programme, but still worth doing in my humble. A change in the reading is more significant than the actual reading so if over 50 a good idea in setting a benchmark. Other tests can they be used to follow up.

I have zero other symptoms, but reading dow - Alfs 2:21 Thu Feb 20 - weakened flow is a sign that something is not right somewhere, not necessarily cancer, so if you have not had that investigated further don’t leave it too long. Well worth it even without the bonus finger.

Had my second scare.... still high PSA .... usual arse check... nothing... where as before it would go straight to biopsy (read my previous experience in the thread) they now scan you ... as long as that comes back clear then no biopsy ... which it did... so basically that's about 6 years that I have had 3 or 4 blood tests that the PSA has been high and their has been zilch activity down there... quacks think I probably just got naturally high PSA !!

Re: Tarbuck diagnosed with prostate cancer ...
It’s not just the oldies that have to worry about it. I was diagnosed with it 7 years ago in my mid 40’s and it had already metastised to my sacrum which means I must have had it for a while without knowing. It is now not a case of treatment as such but containment.

PSA is easily measured through a blood test so have it added to any other blood test that you may be having. The earlier it is caught the better.

Best of wishes to all who have or going through this. I thought it doesn't always show up with just a blood test which is why they do the arse probing thang?

Just make sure his hands aren't on your shoulders when he's doing that :-(

Difficult to improve on that statement, so, with your permission, I'll borrow those words and use them to express my thoughts on the matter.

Dandy.

When she was on The Big Breakfast there was something very attractive about her.

Anyway . The cancer killed my dad in 2010, you just need a blood test now, no finger up the arse these days.

I got it myself in 2017, quite an aggressive form. Had the biopsy and then chemo and radiation (I was being treated for bowel cancer at the same time)

Get yourselves checked out. Best of luck to those posters who have / had it

Syd

I was diagnosed with it in 2016 and told by my Doctor just two days before Christmas.

Had to do a 60 mile daily round trip to Oxford by cab which the NHS paid for to have seven weeks worth of Radiotherapy.

Yes there are some side effects but thankfully so far Things seem to be ok with my regular checks etc.

Just wish I could beat the friggin Diabetes now.

Good luck matey

Re: Tarbuck diagnosed with prostate cancer ...
Many years ago the training department of the company I was with at the time, had a plastic cube (slightly larger than a Rubik's Cube), which had a hole in each face. If you stuck your finger in these holes, the rubber lumps you would feel inside were supposed to be similar to what a clinician would feel inside an arse with prostate cancer at various stages.

Glad to say that when I tried it, I couldn't tell the difference between any of them. Therefore any suggestion of a second career as a prostate examiner was a complete non-starter.
